The "Squint Test" – Designing for Distance

The Problem: A font size that looks huge on your monitor can become unreadable once it’s mounted 15 feet away on a wall. If your audience has to strain to read your message, they will simply look away.

The Strategy

To ensure your content is accessible, use the Squint Test: Stand back 5–6 feet from your monitor and squint. If the main message disappears, your font is too small or your contrast is too low.

  • Font Size: As a rule of thumb, for every 10 feet of viewing distance, your text should increase by at least 1 inch in physical height on the screen.
  • Contrast is King: Avoid "vibrant" combinations like red text on a blue background—this causes a visual vibration. Stick to high-contrast pairings: White on Dark Blue, Black on Yellow, or Dark Grey on White.
  • Sans-Serif Only: Avoid decorative or "script" fonts. Use clean, bold fonts like Arial, Helvetica, or Montserrat for maximum legibility.
